Most of the time this symptom is due to irritation of the cervix (cervicitis) that is easily treated with a cream or pill. However, other things can cause this too, like polyps, fibroids, swelling of the uterine lining (called endometrial hyperplasia), endocervical infections like gonorrhea, IUDs or other foreign objects (don't ask....gynecologists see everything), or even cervical cancer (although this is probably the least common cause). So, even though it's likely a false alarm, it's best to make an appointment and get another exam to make sure all is well. Good luck,
