Questions on fiancee's recent gyn exam

I am a 25 year old male. Last week my fiancée asked me to go with her for her gyn exam.

I have a few questions from the exam that I am curious about and my fiancée couldn’t seem to answer.

Why was the nurse so surprised when I went into the exam room? She asked if we were expecting, my fiancée said no then the nurse asked why I was in the room. Is it not normal for a significant other to be in the room when the patient is not pregnant?

When the Dr. came in the first thing he did was say that he would need to remove the sheet and was it OK to do so with me there. After she said yes he took the sheet and draped it on a chair nearby. This left her completely naked for the 35 minute exam. She has gone to this Dr. for every exam since she was 16 and said that she was surprised when she first started going but isn’t anymore. Is it normal for the patient to be left completely naked? It seemed very strange to me not to mention she said she is uncomfortable.

My final question is what does a breast exam usually entail. He examined her breasts while lying down, while sitting and while standing up, leaning slightly forward. I must say it seemed strange that he needed to do this in all three positions. Is this the normal way to do the exam?

Any information would be great. I asked my fiancée about the gown and the breast exam and she said she has nothing to compare it to. Now she is wondering if it is normal. We also wonder if other people bring there significant others.

Thanks. Mike
