prophylactic oorectomyFrom: linda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 18 Jun 2001 16:46:25 -0500 (CDT)
I am a 50 year old woman, 4 years after mastectomy (invasive ductile and invasive lobular, a 3rd mass with premalignant changes, and scattered foci of carcinoma near and far from the primary tumors). I had one positive lymph node and the tumors were not hormone dependent. I had 4 adryomyacine and 6 CMF, no radiation therapy. The first adryo put me in menopause. On an ultrasound 10 days ago they found a 7mm cyst on one ovary and a 6x8mm myeoma. Until now all ultrasounds were clear. My mother had a primary breast cancer at age 45, mastectomy, extensive lymph involvement, radiation. She had a second primary tumor in the second breast at age 68. This was hormone dependent. My mother's two sisters have both had breast cancer, as has a first cousin on my mother's side, also at age 45. This woman's brother had either leukemia or lymphoma at about age 40. There is clear genetic risk here, but I have not yet had a genetic test. I plan to do this in September when I am visiting the US. I live abroad, and there is more limited testing capability here. Several doctors have recommended prophylactic oorectomy. My questions are: 1. Are there any drawbacks to oorectomy for a woman my age? 2. I understand the procedure is usually done via laparoscopy. What is the skill requirement? Is it very important for a highly experienced person to do this in order to remove all ovarian tissue? 3. I will be at Mayo clinic with my mother in September. Is there a benefit to wait and have the procedure done in a place of this calibre rather than in Israel, my primary residence? Thank you very much for your time and consideration in answering these questions!
