Heavy discharge, but negative vaginal cultureFrom: Suzy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 May 2001 11:04:26 -0500 (CDT)
For the last 6-8 weeks or so, I have had a very heavy, thick, non-odorous white vaginal discharge (I often pass globs of stuff, as big as plum pits and sometimes bigger). I have lots of burning with it, but not much itching. My bladder/urethra got so irritated, I originally thought I had a bladder infection, too, but a urine culture was negative. My doctor said the discharge looked like a very bad yeast infection, and treated it accordingly (diflucan, terazol, etc.). Nothing worked, so he cultured it. The culture came back negative - no yeast growth, no bacterial growth. Just the normal vaginal flora, with nothing growing out of control. My doctor now suggests trying to change the vaginal ph with 3 doses of a vinegar douche, and then if that works, go from there. Have any of you dealt with this kind of thing before? Could it be caused by changes in estrogen levels? (I'm 43, but I've been perimenopausal for 3-4 years already - hot flashes, night sweats, shortened periods). Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted, as this thing has made me completely miserable. The burning makes it hurt to even walk sometimes.
