hemorrhoid help!!!

WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?...I've had external hemorrhoids for about three months now. They occasionally swell up, but even when they're the smallest they get...they still irritate me (pain, burning, etc.). I'm a very active person, so I feel like they are slowing me down. I've tried preparation-H and visisted a Dr. who perscribed Proctosone (hemorrhoidal suppositories). I went through 2 boxes of them and they temporarilly relieved my symptoms, but now that the perscriptions done, I'm back to square one...exactly the same conditions that I started off with. The Doc. was hoping that they'd swell down completely, but they didn't. So my questions are: 1) Once you have hemorroids, should they bother you constantly...just some days more than others (i.e. when they flare up?) 2) The Doc. also said that if they are still bothering me he may be able to recommend me to a surgeon to do the elastic band thing...but he wasn't sure if it would work because mine are not that big...(I'm about ready to step into a thong to intentionally flare them up so that something can be done!!!)...IN THIS DAY AND AGE OF TECHNOLOGY...ISN'T THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO GET RID OF THEM FOR GOOD? I know they're vericose veins, but are they supposed to always be there for the rest of my life to cause me grief? Their must be something I can do!!! 3) Also, how does the elastic band technique work...I have two external hemorroids...do they do both in one visit? Do they fall off immediately? ANY SUGGESTIONS TO EASE MY MIND?!!! Thanks for your time, FRUSTRATED!!!
