I recently have been told by my doctor that I had an abnormal papsmear. He has now requested that I have a biopsy done. I am 21 years old and I was wondering about this. Could you please tell me what the chnces are that it is a type of cancer? Also, what other problems could cause an abnormal papsmear. I would really appreciate the time and effort put into a response. > Sincerly, > Brandie L. Royer this is almost certainly not cancer, however, it could be a pre-cancerous lesion known as dysplasia. That is what the biopsy if for. Depending on the severity of the pap smear, sometimes inflammation can cause abnormalities.
