Congratulations on trying at the right age, Jen. I'm 30 something and still am a little bit of a wimp about going to the GYN (I think its abnormal to not dread it at least a little!). I didn't ever go myself for the first time until I was 28 when my sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I'm still a virgin and probably would have still been waiting til I get married to go to the doc because I was a wimp if it weren't for my sister's diagnosis. OK - I was an idiot. Even with my sister's situation it took me 15 calls over 2 weeks before I let the phone ring long enough to make the appointment. I didn't have quite as rough a time in actually making it through the appointment as you did, but only because I'd told a friend that I was going so she'd ask me if I really went. I didn't want to have to tell her I'd backed out, so I just went.

You really did make it through the worst part- the speculum is the worst part. It sounds like you were dealing with nice people, so hopefully it'll be easier for you next time. Maybe it will help to think of the reasons you need to go - to get through it - to find out everything is ok, to establish a relationship with your doctor while you're well, you get the idea.
