ovarian cysts and weightFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 30 Apr 2001 22:34:36 -0500
I have just been diagnosed with a cyst on my left ovary, measuring about 6 cm. My doctor suspects it is dermoid but has put me on birth control pills to rule out any possibility of it being something else. Assuming no change in its size after 6 weeks, he is recommending a second ultrasound and then likely surgery to remove it. I have had infrequent periods for the past 3 years (3/ year) but this year have bled non-stop for over 4 months. A laparascopy is being talked about but due to my being overweight, my doctor thinks abdominal surgery will need to be done instead. How much of a factor could being overweight lead to the formation of these cysts and what risks will be involved with surgery (abdominal or otherwise)? I am 32 years old and in fairly good health and my blood tests have come back with normal results.
