do they leave staples inside after a LAVH?

I had a LAVH 8 months ago. 4 months ago, I was admitted to the hospital having severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. After several x-rays, I was told that my bowels had "gone to sleep" The dr. did exploratory surgery and found that a staple had attached to my bowel and pelvis. The staple tore my bowel, leaving me unable to have a bowel movement without medication. Is this normal? Not the tearing part, but to have it in there? Also, if it is normal, since it's gone, what was it holding/closing? Do I need to have another put in? This problem is really troubling me. Please help with the answer. I have looked everywhere and can't find anything similar. Thanks
