Request for help

Hello: I’m new to this, so I don’t quite know what to ask. I was recently referred to Johns Hopkins’ Center for Digestive Diseases and Motility Disorders for colonic inertia. While there I had a series of tests (Anorectal Manometry and a Video Proctogram), I am waiting to receive the results from them.

I have always had a problem with constipation (even as a child). This year my symptoms have really gotten worse; I found myself going without a bowel movement for three or four week periods, with headaches, nausea and severe abdominal pain in my right side. I have increased my fiber intake, modified my diet, drink the required amount of water daily and exercise three to four times a week. Short of enemas, suppositories, and laxatives my bowels will not move on their own. I have tried every medical drug that can be prescribed for constipation and I am currently on Lactulose (2 Tablespoons 2 x daily) and Miralax (4 caps full daily). I don’t know if you are aware of the side effects of these two drugs but there is bloating, and gas that makes normal daily activities impossible. (Did I mention that with all that, I only produce small amounts of pencil-thin stool and I feel like I’m nowhere near finished (with lots of straining, still bloating and the abdominal pain)?) Also, I have been hospitalized for fecal impaction.

I would like to know what I’m facing; I cannot taking the Lactulose and Miralax for the rest of my life (that is not an option). Please respond.
