Mike,

Give her a big hug and kiss. Take her request as an ultimate compliment regarding your friendship.

Does your wife hold your hand (or some other part) when the doctor has to give you an injection or whatever else? What is the problem? One of my buddy's wife(she is now 29) has had someone with her every time she had to place her heels in the stirrups, including every baby visit. At first, it was her mother, the summer after her senior year, a girl friend, then when they became a couple, my buddy was given the choice him in the room with her for the exam or he could leave now and not to ever call again.

I cannot tell you exactly what exam clothing you wife will be given, but she should be provided a cover for the upper torso that will stay put while sitting and a drape/sheet for her lower body [Have her tuck the corners or edge under her, to tack the drape in place.] Some places even provide a shawl to help keep warm after disrobing and before the examiner comes to do the exam.

First, physical contact, physical contact, PHYSICAL CONTACT. Hold her hand, hugs and love pecks when things hurt or I LUV U. Secondly: PATIENT ADVOCATE!!! Treat the human being, not the patient, not the disease, and solve the patient's problem and the medical problem will cease to be one. Talk to her, especially when she flinches or closes her eyes. Try to keep her mind on you not what is occurring below her waist.

As soon as you step into the exam room, take your own pulse. Now, take deep and slow breathes until it returns to a normal range (<90, <80 better) and RELAX that jaw. I have gone in with my wife to every one of hers, save two. I normally sit against a wall until the stirrups make their appearance and then I stand beside her or above her head as the room allows.

Continued in next message
