My question is what tests should I absolutely have to protect against abnormalities with my baby. There is no one test or combination of tests that "absolutely protect against abnormalities". There are tests like amniocentesis that can detect SOME probelms -- and ultraosund can detect SOME others, but again, not all the tests in the world can pick up everything. I too had an injectable/IUI pregnancy -- at age 38. My daughter is wonderful, smart, and almost perfect (heck, she's 2 -- there is no such thing as a perfect kid -- mine is an independant, opinionated terror at times!). I had chorionic villus sampling to rule out chromosomal problems, whcih for me provided a lot of peace of mind. Your doctor should have already discusssed teh option of genetic testing with you, or referred you for genetic counseling due to your age. I've written an entire book on the subject of older moms -- Your Over-35 Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide, available in major bookstroes and on-line at amazon.com, bn.com and borders.com
