Hormone cream for cervical erosion?

I am a postmenopausal 59-year-old female who has never been on estrogen replacement therapy. I had a recent examine and the obgyn said I had erosion of the cervix which she said was caused by dryness; I have not suffered from vaginal dryness during sex. She showed me a picture of erosion (or erosive) cervix and it looked like little white pimples.

She recommended a hormonal vaginal cream to be inserted twice weekly. (Since I have already suffered through the hot flashes and night sweats, I have elected not to go on hormone replacement therapy.)

How long will I have to take this cream for it to correct my erosion of the cervix? Are side affects and possible increased risks of cancer less with this type of product than with the pills? Will this condition cause more deterioration of the cervix?
