Transvaginal Ultrasound

I was ordered by my gynecologist to have a transvaginal ultrasound for abdominal pressure and frequent urination and light cramping. I've learned from reading your site that this involves a probe inserted into the vagina and an ultrasound is taken that way. How big is the probe used for this? Is it painful? Why is this method used as opposed to the regular ultrasound on the outside of the body? Please let me know.
