Depo Provera and Bleeding

I have not been having a good experience with Depo. Alongside with the usual side effects listed (depression, weight gain, irregular periods), I have had other strange effects. One morning I woke up and got out of bed, and looked down to see a pool of blood flowing out from me and dripping at my feet. The blood was red, and the flow very heavy. Once I got into the bathroom, I was doubled over with the most painful cramps I have ever experienced. I couldn't move, speak, and could barely talk. I layed on the bathroom floor, paralyzed with pain, sweating, panting with heavy blood flowing out of me until my boyfriend found me and managed to get me some advil. I took four, and the pain eventually subsided, but I would have had to call an ambulance if it hadn't. My doctor said that this was normal? I'm not sure if I believe that though. I would like a second opinion. How can it be normal to bleed like you're dying? I'm also currently taking St. John's Wort, and am wondering if there is a possible interaction.
