Re: 5 MONTH PERIOD/D & C/HYSTEROSCOPY:Need Information PleaseFrom: Lynn D. Montgomery, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 5 Mar 2001 16:43:25 -0600 (CST)
You have what is referred to as dysfunctional uterine bleeding. The easiest way to understand this is to think of the uterine lining having all phases of the menstrual cycle present rather than an organized lining that progresses through a monthly cycle and is shed as a period. By having some of the lining as each stage of the menstrual cycle, that means that there is always some of the lining entering the period phase, thus continual bleeding. The D&C takes the uterine lining down to its baseline throughout and gets everything on an even playing field, so-to-speak. Hopefully, from that point, the uterine lining will function in synch and cycle appropriately. The hysteroscopy simply allows the surgeon to look around in the uterus to assure that nothing else is causing the problem and also to assure that his procedure is complete. Neither of the procedures are associated with much postoperative discomfort and there should be a gradual cessation of the bleeding over a few days following... Lynn
