Maribel, I don't know the circumstances that caused your cousin to be put in this hospital ,but I know from personal experience that, if she isn't a threat to herself or anyone else they can not keep her there longer than 3 days. She can sign herself out, they may try to put a 3 day hold on her, say they are going to go to court etc., but if she isn't suicidal or homicidal, the court will have to let her go. She needs to tell them immediately that she wants to leave because weekends or holidays don't count towards the 3 day hold. Also she doesn't have to take any medication she doesn't want to. However there is always the possibility that she may need inpatient care, but don't let the hospital bully her, her self esteem is probably pretty low at this point and she may need someone in her family to back her up at this point. Just my 2 cents, Joy

My cousin was recently diagnosed with post pardum depression. She was put in a therapeutic residential center against her husbands will. The family is very concerned since she won't eat, speak, and is refusing to take her medicine. Her husband hired a lawyer to get her out but I'm not sure that would help. I saw her this weekend and the nurses told me that she needs someone who she feels comfortable being around and they thought it was me. I find this hard since I life far away. Should we be concerned about her health? How long do you think this will last or how long does it usually take for someone in this situation to get well? My family doesn't really know what is going on, what can I say or do to make them understand or feel better? I would appreciate it very much if you could help me answer all my questions. I feel very useless since there is not much that I could do to make things better.
