Ally,

I had the labioplasty done and mine was out of medical necessity. And b/c of that surgery I ended up creating even newer problems for myself. B/c of that surgery I ended up with a condition.

As for the ins co have you asked if they would cover the procedure out of medical necessity? My ins co covered mine but I don't know what the dr's office had to do to convince the ins co to cover mine. I guess I could find out. It's been 3 years since I had the surgery.

Also, if you check the archives of this forum under the words " labioplasty", and "labia minora" and you will find lots of info on this subject. Now there happened to be a discussion about the size of the labia minora on the PCOS list (also a forum at Obgyn.net) and one of the ladies was saying that her dr told her that the reason for the large labia minora in women with this condition is b/c of there being so much of the male hormone testosterone. I don't know how accurate that thought is but it is an interesting thought b/c I happen to have that hormone condition PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).

I hope that this is of some help, but what I can tell you is that if I knew then what I know about what the labioplasty did to me I would have never had it done.

I had the procedure done in a surgery center. The dr who did my surgery did a straight cut to take it off. The surgery was successful for about 10 months before I ended up with the symptoms of vulvodynia (later got diagnosed with this in Sept of 1999).

In addition to the vulvodynia and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome I also have endometriosis. And right now b/c my endo seems to be growing again the pain from it seems to have run into my vulvar area causing the vulvodynia to flare up again.

If I had to do this again but out of concern for cosmetic purposes then I wouldn't do it. I would only do it out of medical necessity. The reason mine was medically necessary was b/c of the fact that I had problems wearing underwear and pads comfortably b/c of excess skin on the left side.

As to the recovery of that surgery for me it was about 3 weeks. Everyone is different when it comes to the recovery from any surgical procedure.

And like with any surgery there are risks. One possible risk is that of nerve damage. Nerve damage doesn't happen to everyone that gets it done but is a possibility. And I ended up with nerve damage in addition to the vulvodynia as a result of the surgery.

I wish you all the best at trying to get the approval for your surgery and if you have any other questions for me please feel free to e-mail me directly.

Take care,

===== Kristy :)
