-- ------------------------------------------------------------ I have some questions about a conversation that was held on one of the other e-lists for endometriosis. Before I ask the questions here's the conversation in question pertaining to dilation of the cervix supposedly to make the pelvic exams easier:

Girl 1: "My doc said to me they might have to dialate me in order to do it. Not sure what she meant by dialating."

Girl 2: "I think he might have ment Dialating your cervix. Its not a big deal... I have it done every 6 months or so... Its not to bad."

Girl 1: "Isn't dialating cervixes what happens when its time for the baby to come out? How do they do this?"

My questions have to do with the statement of Girl 2. 1. Is she talking about a D&C? 2. If not, what? 3. Is it normal for a dr to dilate the cervix of a woman who has endometriosis so that a pelvic exam is less painful? 4. If yes, how is this done? 5. Is this something that I should be asking my dr to do the next time I see her? (I had a D&C in 1997) 6. If it is a D&C that is being mentioned is there a way to do them in the exam room now so that the patient doesn't have to go to the OR or does this still have to be performed in the OR (like I tried to tell her)?

I'm totally confused and I want to be able to give more information to girl 2 as I have a feeling that she may have misunderstood what her drs have told her.
