5 cm follicular ovarian cystFrom: Orion (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 12 Feb 2001 01:08:03 -0800
A few days ago my 26 year old girlfriend had an ultrasound revealing a follicular ovarian cyst 5 cm in diameter on her right ovary. I do not know if the cyst is physiologic (functional) or pathologic. This is especially troubling because her left fallopian tube was removed along with a malignant tumor 3 months ago Her doctor, who specializes in Obstetrics/Gynecology, has prescribed the pill and told her that he will perform another ultrasound in 1 month. He especially worried her by saying that he will avoid surgery as long as possible because it would cause infertility, but that he thinks it will go away. Can this really be his diagnosis, or should I assume that my girlfriend oversimplified it in relaying it to me? If the cyst is in fact pathologic, my limited searching on the internet leads me to believe that at this stage a cystectomy can be performed and the ovary possibly salvaged. How would you compare the risk of performing a cystectomy to the risk of waiting and hoping the cyst dissolves on its own? It also seems to me that a month is a long time to wait for the next ultrasound. Should she seek a second opinion, and if so, should she see a doctor with a different specialty? I apologize for the length, but as you can imagine I am very distressed and have many questions. I thank you for your time
