So, without asking me (I would have refused this request), the OR staff found less qualified nurses (all were female) to assist. It was a nightmare. I was doing a tough laparoscopy case, and the team the patient refused to allow in the room was outstanding. The replacement team was miserable. The patient, due to her inability to see past gender requirements, actually endangered herself. If this happens in the future I will likely explain to the patient that we choose medical professionals based on qualifications, and that I do not prefer to perform a procedure with a less qualified staff.
