Positive Pap Smear and Cervical Errosion?From: Susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 23 Jan 2001 17:12:28 -0600 (CST)
Last year I saw my primary care physician for a pap smear. It came back postive, he sited "A typical squamous cells" as the cause and referred me to an OB/GYN for a second pap smear. I saw the OB/GYN the following week, was told everything was fine and he sent me on my way, without a second pap smear. In November of 2000, a year after my positive pap smear, I began to have some bleeding during and after sexual intercourse. Intercourse also became uncomfortable. Now it's January, I bleed everytime I have sex, I have mild pelvic pain (more an annoyance then painful)lower back pain (low as in tailbone area) that is becoming more painful by the day, I swear my left leg is swollen and hurts right below my left buttock and related or not..a strong metal taste in my mouth which started about the same time as the backache. My periods, while still regular, are much heavier and last a few days longer than they used to. I saw the OB/GYN today. I told him of my symptoms and rather than doing a pap smear he did a "wet prep", I'm not sure what this is as he never gave me a clear answer. He asked me several times if I was having discharge or vaginal itching, which I am not. He said there was "something" on my cervix and applied Silver Nitrate to it. His nurse later told me it was "errosion". He lectured me about Kegels, made me demonstrate them for him and pointed out that painful sex could be caused by my inability to relax. I told him I was quite capable of relaxing. He ignored this and proceeded to discuss Kegels and suggested I take a hot bubble bath, maybe sip some wine (I can't, the antibiotic he prescribed strongly discourages drinking while taking this medication) before having sex which will help me to relax. All said while his hand was inside of me. The OB/GYN left the room and came back a few minutes later and told me my test (What test?!) showed a minor bacterial infection for which he prescribed an antibiotic. He said the infection could be the cause of the discharge/itching (Once again, I suffer from neither)He also said my uterus was retaining water for which he prescribed a water retention pill. This medication is also used to lower the blood pressure in people that have congenitive heart failure according to the pharmacist. Whoa. I asked if all of this would be the cause of bleeding during intercourse, lower back pain, swollen leg, pelvic pain and pain during intercourse. He said an infection of the cervix could cause bleeding during sex and it would cause discharge and itching. I almost ran from the room screaming. On my way to the front desk I noticed on the paper he handed me to give to the receptionist that the only symptom circled was "discharge". Nothing noted about MY symptoms. I was billed $75.00 and was told to come back on Feb. 27th for a pap smear. Am I nuts or did I just see the doctor from hell? My husband says he's the doctor, he knows what he's doing and I need to follow his advice. I feel like my problems were totally ignored, I can't imagine an infection causing this much trouble, especially since he said the infection was "minor". Should I find another doctor? I don't feel like I should wait a month for a pap smear seeing as how there is "something" on my cervix. I guess I should note: I'm 33, I have had 4 children with my first pregnancy at 17, I have yearly pap smears which seems to be the only time I have to see a doctor, strict follower of The Zone diet, exercise daily but smoke half a pack a day for which I just started taking Zyban. I would greatly appreciated some advice..in the meantime I'll be the one in the corner sippin' wine and doing Kegels until I'm blue in the face *sarcastic grin*
