period and tampon questions

Hi, I have a few quick questions. First of all, I've heard that you should change tampons every 4-6 hours to be safe. I normally do this and assumed that this meant I shouldn't wear one tampon overnight (8-9 hours). Is this true? My roommate wears tampons overnight and has no problems. Is this safe?

Second, a lot of my menstrual fluid this month has been much darker (almost black!) than usual. Is this normal or could it be a sign of a problem?

Lastly, when do I count the first day of my period. I usually have a day before I truly start when there is blood when I wipe after urinating, but nothing shows up on a pad. Is this the first day? Thanks so much for your help!
