Swollen burning areola - could it be pregnancy?From: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 7 Jan 2001 02:40:19 -0600 (CST)
I'm 27 years old, overweight, and smoke. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago. My periods have always been severly irregular since the beginning. I suffer from a severe hormone imbalance that caused a very large size difference in my breasts. I have been to many doctors/obgyns for this imbalance and all they could do was put me on different forms of the pill. To no avail, this only made me sick and didn't help anything. In the past 4 years I have been pregnant twice but unfortunately lost both pregnancies during the 1st trimester due to the imbalance. After the 2nd miscarriage in April of 98 is when i was diagnosed with PCOS. About a year after the diagnosis I had severe pain in my abdomen and around my ovaries. When the ultrasound was performed, the doctor and I were astonished to see that the cysts were gone. However I still was not ovulating and had no periods. I finally had a period in Jan 99 that was painful, light to heavy, clotty, and lasted about 3 weeks. Then nothing till late April of 2000. It began with spotting then went full blown for about 3 weeks again. About a week and a half before Thanksgiving I had begun spotting very lightly (only noticable when I had gone to the bathroom) on and off every other day for about 2 weeks, followed by severe cramping, small/large clotting, and light/heavy flow for another 2 weeks. Around the 13th of December my fiancee and I had intercourse, I thought my period was finished as there had been nothing for a day or two, but to our surprise, I wasn't. Each week except for that one I had taken an at home ovulation test and each week it was positive. A day or two after the intercourse I took another ov test and it was still positive. I find this extremely weird to have such a high lh level for 4 weeks in a row. These past 2-3 weeks I have been experiencing severe drowsiness, spells of dizziness, lower abdomen pressure that comes and goes like gas, and flu like sinus that medication doesn't seem to touch. Some days I have extreme hunger, then the next day no hunger at all. Recently I have broken out in a rash that seems to look like eczema (which I am making an appointment with my doctor about) but the itching is not on the dry spots, it's everywhere else, especially on the sides and top of my "larger" breast. My face has broken out to the point of my cheeks and some areas of my forehead are bright red and have small pimples all over them. This is very unusual for me and has never happened to me before. There has been some sensitivity and pain with my breasts, but today (Jan 7th) my larger breast is giving me a burning sensation around the areola and a dark circle has outlined the top and partially the sides of the areola. Also, the areola is swollen slightly on both breasts, and my breasts are very hot to the touch (hotter than the rest of my body at least). Because of my hormone imbalance I have no idea when my period is actually due and when I would actually be considered "late". My co-worker who is 5-6 weeks along in her pregnancy has recently experienced all of the above symptoms and is just now getting over some of them, including the rash (which her doctor diagnosed as eczema). Could what I am experiencing be caused by being around her all of the time or could I be pregnant too? I figured I would get some advice before I ran out to get the test. Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance - Lisa
