spotting in luteal phase

I only have my period about 4 times per year on my own, since I stopped taking the pill 15 months ago. (Before bcp I was irregular too.)About 1/2 the time (and the one month I took Clomid) I had spotting anywhere from a week after ovulation to the start of menstruation, to the entire luteal phase (14 days for me). This month, for the first time, I had 2 days of very light flow of red blood (usually it's not red), then about 13 days of brown stringy spotting (very small quantity). All hormone tests have come back normal and I did ovulate with 50 mg Clomid.

I travel almost constantly for work. We'd like to become pregnant very soon and I am wondering if progesterone suppositories will be necessary or if that is not needed for someone w/ high enough prog levels after ovulation. Should other tests be done to rule out another problem? Scheduling an endometrial biopsy is difficult since I have irregular cycles. I am 28.

I read several postings that made this spotting sound like more of an annoyance than something that would prevent pregnancy. I also get the impression I am not alone with this situation. Does anyone really know the cause of this spotting or is just the complex workings of a very sensitive balance of hormones?

Any information you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
