As far as I understand its physically safe. However...

Remember that you may still be able to get pregnant, and are susceptible to any and all STDs, so use a condom. Additionally, many partners prefer use of the shower at this time, especially if the flow is heavy, to avoid the mess of the bleeding and allow for instant cleanup. Also be prepared you may bleed more heavily than usual for a few minutes after climax.

If you have or are suspected to have a condition such as endometriosis, intercourse may be painful, especially during the period. Be sure to let your doctor know if you notice any discomfort.
