Strange Brown Post-Ovulation Premenstrual Spotting

My husband and I have tried for the last five months to conceive, though our attempts so far have been unsuccessful. I have not taken birth control pills for more than a year and a half. For the last three months, there has been spotting that occurs within two or three days after ovulation and persists daily until my period arrives, which seems to remain on a regular 28 day cycle. This spotting is brownish and consists of a stringy-like substance. At first, we believed the spotting to be breakthrough bleeding as it has never occurred along with my period before. I have always had regular 28 day periods, with none varying more than three or four days and have had very little spotting during ovulation, but never any afterward. Could this be a symptom of some underlying medical condition that is preventing us from conceiving?
