cyst follow-up

I'm 52 and still having periods. Two years ago had a 6cm. benign ovarian tumour removed (along with the ovary). Nine months ago, a pelvic ultrasound showed a 2cm functional cyst according to the report. Because of my past surgery, my doctor recommended repeating the ultrasound three months later. The cyst was still there and only a tiny bit smaller. She says in older women, it's not unusual for a cyst to persist and there's no need to repeat an ultrasound again since both reports say "functional". What's the standard practice for a cyst that persists? Does it depend on the size as well as appearance on the ultrasound whether further follow-up is needed? Thanks.
