After 11 months of breastfeeding three babies, my flat nipples aren't flat anymore. Our culture makes a big deal out of the prominence of nipples. If you really feel strongly that you want to "conform or be cast out," like the old song went, you might try looking at some breastfeeding handbooks for information on exercises to "draw out" flat or inverted nipples. (The books will help you define which category you fall into. I'd try to describe it all here, but this is one of those situations in which a picture is worth at least 1000 words.)
