The treatment for PMDD currently is an anti-depressant called Sarafem which is manufactured by the same company who makes Prozac. In fact I remember the news reports saying that Sarafem is Prozac but under a different name.
As to why we are just now hearing about this I couldn't tell you when it comes to an exact reason but my feeling is that it's b/c it's taken some time to understand just how this affects so many just like it took time to understand PMS.
