would my doctor notice if I have a vaginal infection?

I understand from other questions you have answered that having a strong vaginal odor and discharge is most likely the result of an infection. Mine makes me very uncomfortable, I feel like I smell and other people might notice, especially when I work out. It has also kept me from feeling comfortable with sex. I am uncomfortable just saying this to my obgyn. Wouldn't an vaginal infection be noticed in a regular exam? And is there any easy way you could suggest to ask about my problem, without completely embarassing myself?
