amenorrhea gone for a year, bloating, pain in ovaries, worsening

Last year, I had amenorrhea, caused by stress, for about 3 months. It was treated with provera and I've had pretty regular periods every month. But after my periods, especially around the time I should be ovulating, my ovaries hurt and I retain water. I also have "moon face." Based on what I've read it sounds like I'm not ovulating. It's very unpleasant as is the weight gain (the stress was caused in part by quitting smoking and, frankly, every time I feel myself bloating back up, it makes me want to reach for a cigarette. I quit so I could feel better, not worse and less attractive.) I'm reluctant to go on the pill. I might consider it if I could understand how using birth control pills to preclude ovulation could alleviate the symptoms of anovulation. See my confusion? What are my options? Might this correct itself in time? It's already been a year.

Thank you for your time and help. June

A little more background: I'm 34. Prior to the amenorrhea, I had healthy, normal cycles. Another factor that's changed is that I haven't been sexually active for a while (a divorce was another event contributing to the stress), so I can't help but wonder whether the lowered sexual activity is a factor. (But who wants to mingle and meet people feeling all bloated and unattractive?)
