Hair Loss-Not on any Medication

I am a 39 F which has noticed that my hair has thinned out very much in the last few months. I have no specific bald spot. My top is thinning out to the point that I can see my scalp and it is noticeable. I have always had thick and lots of hair. In my family the females have good hair. My grandmother on father's side always had very thin hair but had hair. My mother loss a little hair but I see that my condition is worse.

I am not on any medically prescribed medicines and have not been on the birth control pill in over 13 years. The things that I do take are all natural vitamins & minerals. I am overweight but have been dieting and exercising for the last 2 months and have lost 27lbs. I have always worked with much stress so that is not new. I am terrified of this situation and it has me very nervous. I just went to my doctor and she is running blood work.

Please explain to me what could possibly be happening. Is this a sign of pre-menopause? Hormone changes that I need to know about? How do I stop it and get it to grow back?

I apologize for the long email but thought you should have some detail from me. I do not think I have felt so anxious about a situation as I do lately with this.
