Re: PPD vs. 'regular' depressionFrom: Nancy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 17 Nov 2000 17:59:42 -0600 (CST)
I had depression of some variety after each of my 3 pregancies. The first 2 times, I had tried unsuccessfuly to nurse for about 3 weeks. When I finally decided to just bottle feed, I felt relieved but then shortly thereafter, depression set in. I think in retrospect that it was a combination of hormonal changes plus numerous things about my situation, some typical of any pregnancy and some not. I spent weeks in the hospital during each pregnancy and had each baby 6 weeks early. One of the patient educators who was a great support to me during that time said she thought I had "post traumatic stress disorder" (like war veterans get) rather than PPD. I also experienced this after my 3 rd delivery, several weeks postpartum, but that time I did not attempt to nurse and had no sadness about the decision. I think there were multiple issues for me having been in the hospital for 11 weeks that time and unable to care for an infant and a toddler at home. I was very energetic initially just to be out of the hospital and have my family back together, but still, the depression set in a short time later, so I'm still thinking the hormones at least trigger it. Anyway, I've read that PPD can occur anytime within the first year. For me it eventually went away. I think it was the 3rd episode that caused me to seek both counseling and medication and both were extremely helpful and were only needed for a few months. I found a wonderful female counselor who had experienced infertility and was just very empathetic to all of the emotions/situations we women experience. I hope if you are experiencing this personally, you will seek help and not try to get through it alone. You can feel better!
