Usually Post partal depression is just one form of "situational depression" where the situation is the stress of taking care of a newborn and the stress of suddenly realizing what being a parent is all about and the sudden changes in hormonal status. Other situations that can lead to depression are death of a loved one, loss of a job, etc. The other kind of depression called Major depressive disorder is not usually related ot a life event and is more severe(usually) than situational dpression. If Depression of any kind is severe enough, it should be treated.
