Forgot to take out my ovaries!From: Cookie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 7 Nov 2000 02:43:18 -0600 (CST)
I'm 47 yrs old, diagnosed with menometrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, probable endometriosis and adenomyosis (later confirmed). My doctor told me a hyst would resolve my problems and it was MY decision to keep or remove my ovaries. I decided to have them removed and the doctor was in complete agreement. He even said that it made his job easier. The Pre-op Admit Orders & the board outside the operating room both had TAH/BSO for my procedure. My family asked a nurse what TAH/BSO meant and the nurse explained "total hysterectomy and removal of the ovaries." I had no reason to think the doctor would do otherwise. After surgery the doctor told my family that I was ok and that he left in my ovaries. They told the doctor that was NOT my request, my decision was to remove them. The attending physician wanted to re-open me(abdominal hyst)and remove my ovaries, but my doctor declined. The next day my doctor gave me the news. I was furious and I told him so! My doctor openly admits his error -- he transcribed his History and Physical notes wrong.(I don't know why he referred to ONLY his incorrect notes and didn't even look at his Orders to the Operating Room.) Now the doctor tells me that he cannot remove my ovaries. He knew they were healthy ovaries before surgery and agreed to remove them, but now he claims that he cannot remove healthy ovaries. By the way,the doctor wrote in his (incorrect)notes that I've been advised as to the risk of leaving my ovaries in!! Previous to my surgery, my period was on a 19-23 day schedule and I've just gone through my 1st post-hyst period without the bleeding. I am MISERABLE and ANGRY. I'm tired of crying every time someone asks me how my surgery went. I'm tired of being on the emotional roller coaster that my hormones keep me on. I want my ovaries out. My doctor is very well aware of my feelings. My questions are: Now what? I'm in my 4th week of recovery and I want them out by the end of my 6th week. How can I accomplish this? Being miserable and angry for a year is not an option.
