Getting Married this Sunday,

I am getting married this Sunday. I asked my doctor for birth control pills, to help stop my period which is (was) due on my wedding day. He gave me Ovcon 35. I had a strange reaction, some sort of intense, heavy dark liquid I produced. He told me to "double up" on my pills everyday. I did, the reaction stopped. Now my period has arrived! It's a week early than usual. When I called my doctor today, he told me to get off the Ovcon and switch to Orthtricycline. I did that today. He told me to take 2 ortho's instead of just one, and that should stop my period all together. I am not sure how safe this is, having started birth control pills for the first time in my life just 3 & 1/2 weeks ago, and having had the reaction I did, and now having my period early and changing the brand of pill I'm taking. Any thoughts would be great.
