Re: Hungry before periodFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 31 Oct 2000 23:12:33 EST
Hi, Yes, it's very normal to be extra hungry before menstruating. Many women often have cravings of certain kinds of food (especially salt and sweets). You don't want to overindulge in either, since sweets turn to fat and salts into excess water weight. This can lead to increased cramping. I try to have a snack size box of pretzels, saltine crackers, oyster crackers, and other lowfat snacks during this time myself, and space it out. If you crave sweets, try to find things that are low in fat and sugar. They say that a craving usually passes in twenty minutes. I've found this to be generally true but not foolproof. Try to keep extra busy during your period to avoid excess eating and cravings. Foods like pasta, rice, and vegetables will fill you up best and are generally healthy foods. Physical activity can help counteract the hunger, keep you in shape, and for some, help decrease PMS and pelvic pain symptoms you may experience at that time. Mild walking, swimming, biking, or using a gentle exercise video are all good choices for exercise. Take Care Kas
