Bleeding that heavily in early pregnancy is predictive of a significant number of unhappy pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage, late miscarriage, preterm labor and delivery, fetal growth retardation, low amniotic fluid, placental insufficiency, preterm/premature rupture of membranes, and prolonged nursery stays. One or more of these things can occur up to 50% of time with prolonged, heavy 1st trimester bleeding.
