What's the story on milk?From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Oct 2000 18:24:43 -0600 (CST)
I've started to see various news stories and articles describing milk and dairy products as basically unhealthy for you. The basic argument is essentially that adult humans are not designed to consume any milk, and certainly not cow's milk. That milk is actually a poor source of calcium because the calcium in milk is difficult to absorb and the protein in milk actually contributes to osteoporosis by leaching minerals from the bones. Several of the articles quote the "Harvard Nurses Study" which supposed studied the rate of osteoporosis and fractures. In a way it makes sense - no other species consumes milk after infancy and almost never from another species. But there is something about the whole notion that just sounds "fringey". Is this idea being accepted by mainstream medicine at all, or is it considered "out there"? Andrea
