breaking the hymen

Hi, I recently had my first visit to the GYN. I was told that my hymen is extremely intact and most likely unable to be broken by intercourse (as I already knew!). The GYN said that she could manually break it but I"m wondering what is involved in this, how it would be done, and what kind of pain I would have during and after. She said it would not require anasthesia but now that I think about it I'm not sure whether she meant ANY or just general. I'm very nervous about this and I would like to hear of other women's experiences with a doctor breaking thier hymen for them. Thank you in advance for all of your help.
