hypothyroidism - rapid weight gain after twin pregnancyFrom: Audrey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 26 Oct 2000 13:30:51 -0500 (CDT)
I'm 26 yrs old and have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for a little over a year now. I had previously used Depo as a BC method, but gained 60 pounds within 9 months and stopped using it. There were also lots of other miserable symptoms which added to my discomfort. That was what prompted me to go to a doctor 9/99 for help losing weight. My TSH level was tested which led to the diagnosis of hypothyroidism and I began taking synthroid (.75 mg). I then became pregnant in October with twins and gave birth 5/00. I started the pregnancy weighing 330 lbs. I had my TSH tested twice during the pregnancy and once postpartum. I've been at 0.1 mg strength for a year now. The pregnancy was pretty uneventful for a twin pregnancy. I lost 40 lbs during the first trimester, but then started slowly gaining again. I was 316 when they were born and 270 at my five week postpartum checkup. I thought my weight loss would continue, but it hasn't. In fact, I've started gaining weight more rapidly than before. My most recent TSH test was 7/00 and I was kept at the same dosage level, but I feel terrible. I am now back at 330 and still gaining. This means that I have gained 60 pounds in 5 months. I also started using orthotri-cyclene as a BC method in July just a week before my last TSH test. I take my synthroid in the morning and I take my BC pill at night. Okay my 2 questions are: Should I go to a doctor who specializes in thyroid disorders or a gynecologist? My main goal is to lose weight and start feeling better. When I first began treatment, I had large amounts of energy and felt wonderful. However, since starting orthotri-cyclene, I haven't been feeling the same physically. I'm feeling very much the same as I did when I took Depo but not as severe. I've never been on BC pills before and think this may be a factor. I have taken into consideration that I'm a new mom to two babies, but things have been going wonderfully. We have an established routine and they both sleep through the night. I was actually under more stress last year finishing my last year of college and applying to grad school. My second question has to do with finances. Am I correct in assuming that visits to an endocrinologist would cost much more than a gynecologist? Thanks for any advice, Audrey
