My reply may be too late to be of use, and I hope one of the obstetric-knowledgable people will review and clarify my answer, but I see you've gotten no response, so I'll bite. Since amniocentesis is generally used to detect chromosomal (genetic) abnormalities in the fetus, and level 2 ultrasound is usually used to just "take a look" at the fetus, I'm wondering if perhaps there's been some miscommunication between your doctor and you about the reason that he or she suggested amnio. I hope that you'll discuss the matter again to clarify the reasons, as well as the risks and benefits. Best wishes for a healthy and easy pregancy.
