fibroids and birth control pillsFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 18 Oct 2000 19:11:11 -0500 (CDT)
I recently had three fibroids removed, the largest 7.5 cm. My doctor has reccommended going on Alesse 28 low-dose birth control pills. (I am 36, exercise regularly and do not smoke.) I like the convenience of the pills, but am wary of taking them because of my predisposition to fibroids. Much of what I have read suggests that estrogen (even in low doses) may contribute to fibroids. Though other studies seem to dispute that, or even to suggest that the progesterone of the pills reduces the chances of getting fibroids again. Has there been a definitive study about the impact (if any) of birth control pills on fibroids? What is the current thinking? Thank you.
