Ovary removal at time of HysterectomyFor more information on symptoms and treatment of endometriosis visit www.EndometriosisZONE.org. From: Donna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 18 Oct 2000 13:14:05 -0500 (CDT)
I know this is a "worn out" question and I've searched the archives but... I'm 40 and scheduled for a TVH/possible BSO in December, for multiple and growing fibroids. My gyn says I'm "on the fence" with ovary removal, at an "inbetween" age. She said she will do what I wish, but that she thinks I have atleast 5 good years of use from them, so if they look o.k. she'll leave them. During a Dec. 99 lap I had terrible adhesions removed from one, the other looked fine. I do not have endo or family history of ovarian or breast cancer. She said if the ovaries have a problem, she can remove them vaginally. Is this easy or risky to do vaginally? I asked her about the chances they will shut down anyway after the hyst., and she said if she doesn't disrupt their blood supply, she usually doesn't see that often. Is that reasonable? She also feels if one has to be removed, the other should take care of my needs. How do you weigh the benefit of ovary removal to prevent ovarian cancer from the risk of estrogen therapy and breast cancer?
