Acne and Oral ContraceptivesFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 18 Oct 2000 08:33:15 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, I've been looking for guidance in selecting an oral contraceptive that will improve or at the very least not aggrivate my acne. I was diagnosed with cystic acne about 7 years ago and used accutane twice. It helped dramatically, although I wasn't thrilled with the side effects (dry lips, nose, etc.) I've since had 2 children and am currently struggling with finding a contraceptive that does not cause break through bleeding. Meanwhile I'm also noticing my acne getting worse. After the first pregnancy we tried ortho-trycylcen but I had break through bleeding and my doctor felt that at my age (30 at the time) that I might be having problems with a pill that increases the hormones during the cycle as opposed to a steady dose the entire cycle. The pill I'm currently trying is Ortho-cyclen but I'm having bleeding, so I'm attempting Ortho 777 next month. My concern, beyond finding an effective pill for me, is finding one that will improve or not aggravate my acne. If I can't take Ortho-tricyclen (maybe I didn't give my body enough time to adjust), what comprable contraceptive would you recommend, or would you recommend staying off the pill completely? My obgyn will not commit to any pill in relation to acne. I am currently 32 and am tired of dealing with acne. I'm not planning on more children but my husband is not yet ready to commit to a vasectomy and I would prefer to not have to use alternate contraceptive methods. Thank you for any help you can give me.
