Acne, hirsutism and pregnancyFrom: Jennifer (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 17 Oct 2000 20:03:19 -0500 (CDT)
I am 27. At 19 I had a dermoid cyst removed from my ovary. The symptoms leading the the diagnosis were hirsutism (mild) and irregular periods. I still have excessive hair growth, although most has been removed by electrolysis. My general practitioner tested and found no hormonal imbalances. My OB/GYN said that the hirsutism is likely hereditary since there hasn't been much imporvement. 1) If it the hair growth was originally caused by the cyst, would the growth have gradually decreased over the last 10 years since the cyst has been removed and since they can't find any hormonal imbalances (it's been at least that long since I first noticed it)? I also have been battling moderate acne for about 3 years. I did not break out as a teenager. The most effective treatment has been tetracycline and various topical medications, but I stopped taking the tetracycline that because I plan on trying to conceive beginnig in February. I wasn't breaking out nearly as much, although my skin still felt bumpy, but I just started breaking out again (big red cysts). My dermatologist prescribed Erythromycin and Azelex. I don't really want to just treat the symptoms. Considering that I will be trying to conceive, is there anything else that you recommend? Should I see an endocrinologist for both the hair growth and acne? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
