Low libidoFrom: Aileen (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 7 Oct 2000 00:13:36 -0500 (CDT)
This is not a question but my experiences thus far with my libido problem to encourage other women to pursue their problems with vigor. My history is a 42 yr old women with OCP use for 20+ years till I had a tubal lifgation about 18 months ago. From then on my libido declined. SLowly so that at forst I didn't take too much notice and then it got to the point where I really realised there was a problem. Two sets of blood tests showed in one a quite high level of testosterone (2.5 nmol/L) and in the other very low (0.3 nmol/L). One (male)endocrinologist had a look at me and pronounced me OK. Took me almost a bit of a barney with my GP to get to see a gyno who turned out to be more sympathetic. Meanwhile I'd done a lot of lit searching and corresponded with a researcher in the ES (Australia). Her opinion was te ttmt was an option and gave me all sorts of info on doses and monitoring. Eventually found this good gyno and have been on te therapy (a 2% te cream) for about 2 weeks. I am noticing an improvement - not only in my libido but also in my training (I am a runner and weight trainer). I feel much more like training - before I was suffering from a long term lack of motivation - now I believe this to be the low te levels causing lack of drive - NOT laziness. My gyno said that te levels WILL fluctuate quite a bit. I am being tested every two weeks at the moment. But levels of below 4nmol/L are what she is looking for. She reckons it may go up to 6 or 8 at times while I am on ttmt but that is OK. She expects me to come off it eventually. The formulation being used is the same as natural te and won't depress my own production. She reckons that its my long term pill use that has upset things. Might I add I was always OK while on the pill. My other hormone levels are all normal. My take home message to other women is persevere and don't go on the results from only one blood test. In my case being pre menopausal, getting te ttmt was even more difficult because its not generally accepted as a problem in so called normal women. Here not all gyno's are in favour of te ttmt also - it has a real stigma being a male hormone but the doses we use are much less and no bad side effects have been noted. The researchers only comment was that if I found myself becoming grumpy to take it only every other day rather than 1x day. My current gyno said she'll cut it to every other day after two months anyway and then I guess eventually off it completely. Hope this helps someone.
