Tired of Bleeding

I am 49 year old, have had normally spaced but heavy (2 - 3 days, use ibuprofen to control flow) periods every 28 - 29 days until July this year. I was approx. 1 week late, started a not particularly heavy period, 10 days later, still moderate flow, noticed moderate pitting edema, first time in my life. Adopted wait and see for a couple of weeks. Didn't stop bleeding, had a couple of episodes of heavy, flood the tampon and pad type of thing. Gyn put me on provera but between the time i spoke to her and she called the pharmacy, I started a 6 day very heavy flow - 2 boxes of 40 ultra tampons, always flooded through with half to full soaked super, long pad. This bleeding left me dizzy and unable to walk more than a hundred yards with stopping. The breathless part, at least is gone now. After this bleeding, change provera to estrogen component of (?) Levelen28, had endometrial biopsy, normal and ultrasound with enlarged uterus (11.7 cm) with diffuse heterogenous echoes not identifiable fibroids, a simple 2.3cm ovarian cyst and several follicles. I was told the Levelen would stop the bleeding in 2 - 3 days and when I finished the 14 days, I should have a period in another 2 - 3 days. Count that as day 1 and on day 10 start provera for days 10 - 26. Well, I never stopped bleeding. Finished the 14 day levelen, cramps are more painful, bleeding is increased.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My questions: What do I count as day 1 to countdown to the provera and, how long do I put up with this annoyance (since there are no nasties) before giving up on hormone therapy. My mother didn't have menopausal symptoms until her mid fifties ( we don't know when she stopped menstruating because she had hysterectomy in early 40's for repair of pelvic relaxation and incontinenc.)
