Abnormal Pap Test ResultsFrom: Sandra (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 29 Sep 2000 18:14:24 -0500 (CDT)
In August 1999 my pap test result came back with a diagnosis of hyperkeratosis. I had never had an abnormal pap smear prior to this. This was my first time seeing this new doctor. My OBGYN repeated the test in October and the result was normal. I do not know if the result was normal because at the time of the re-test I had a yeast infection that I was treating. The doctor had to remove the mediction from my cervix that I was using to treat the infection. This August my pap test came back diagnosed as ASCUS. I am due to have a colposcopy next week and am very worried about what the results may show. I do not smoke and have never had sexual intercourse. I did have toxic shock syndrome in 1988. I have read that a diagnosis of hyperkeratosis is more worrisome because it can indicate that more keratin is being produced because of a tumor. I am worried that my condition is "progressing" from hyperkeratosis to ASCUS. 1. I do not fall into any of the "risk" categories. Can my results be from the distant bacterial infection I experienced in 1988 from toxic shock? 2. Is it possible to acquire the HPV virus without actually having sexual intercourse? 3. Is it possible that the results of my colposcopy could still only indicate inflammation or do you think that they will find dysplasia upon examination? 4. Do the history of my results indicate a "progression" of potential disease? 5. Can tampons cause ASCUS or hyperkeratosis results on pap smears? I have always used tampons throughout the entire course of my menstrual cycle. I am not necessarily very cautious about changing them frequently. Thank you for your help.
